Lateral process fracture of the talus: A case series and review of the literature
The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery Nov 06, 2019
Wijers O, et al. - Persons diagnosed with the lateral process of the talus (LPFT; n = 36) and treated at a Level 1 trauma center between 2001 and 2018 were involved in order to assess treatment and long-term outcomes of LPFT via a review of the literature and to propose a modified classification on the basis of severity and intra- or extra-articular location of LPFT. According to the modified classification, one had type 1A, six had type 1B, ten had type 2, 11 had type 3, six had type 4A, and two had type 4B. Operative fixation was performed on 28 persons. The median American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Hindfoot Score was 75 and the median Foot Function Index was 2. The median score for the EuroQol-5D and for the health status component was 0.8 and 75, respectively. In conclusion, there is some space for conservative treatment of LPFT, nonetheless, it was firmly believed that this should be recognized only for nondisplaced, small-fragment, and extra-articular fractures. Further, surgical treatment results in an overall good (long-term) outcome.
