Laser transoral microsurgery in treatment of early laryngeal carcinoma

European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology May 09, 2019

Djukic V, et al. - Researchers retrospectively studied 234 patients with squamocellular carcinoma of the larynx treated with laser, for overall (OS), disease-specific (DSS) and disease-free survival (DFS) depending on age, gender, common risk factors (tobacco and alcohol use), histopathological tumor grade, anterior commissure involvement, performed tracheotomy, positive surgical margins, T stage, type of endoscopic cordectomy, postoperative radiotherapy and laryngeal preservation. Observations revealed 5-year OS and DSS of 92.5% and 95.3%, respectively. As per multivariate Cox regression analysis, significant negative prognostic factors for 5-year DSS and DFS were age, histological tumor grade and laryngeal preservation. Outcomes revealed the achievement of excellent oncological results with transoral laryngeal microsurgery, even in selected patients with higher stages of early laryngeal cancer and anterior commissure involvement.
