Isolated diastolic hypertension and target organ damage: Findings from the STANISLAS cohort

Clinical Cardiology Sep 20, 2021

Monzo L, Ferreira JP, Lamiral Z, et al. - Findings showed absence of a significant association between isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH) and hypertension-related target organ damage.

  • This cross-sectional study included 1,605 individuals from the STANISLAS cohort, a large familiar longitudinal study from Eastern France.

  • Participants were grouped as having normal BP; combined hypertension; IDH (systolic blood pressure <130/diastolic blood pressure >80 mmHg); isolated systolic hypertension (ISH).

  • Considering normotension as reference, IDH was not significantly related to NTproBNP levels, microalbuminuria, diastolic dysfunction, and left ventricular (LV) mass index.

  • In addition, there was no significant link of IDH with LV longitudinal strain, carotid intima media thickness, reduced ankle-brachial index and pulse wave velocity, when normotension was used as reference.

  • There was an independent association of combined hypertension and ISH with LV mass index and pulse wave velocity increase.
