Is the rationale more important than deception? A randomized controlled trial of open-label placebo analgesia

Locher C, et al. - This study was planned to determine the effects of open-label placebos and deceptive placebos (DPs) in comparison with no treatment (NT) with a standardized experimental heat pain paradigm in a randomized controlled trial in healthy participants. Findings revealed the superiority of placebos with a plausible rationale in comparison to without a rationale. Furthermore, open-label placebos did not differ significantly in their effects from DPs. Hence, the ubiquitously assumed necessity of concealment in placebo administration seemed doubtful.
