Inverse association between physical activity and blood glucose is independent of sex, menopause status, and first-degree family history of diabetes

Journal of Diabetes Investigation Apr 26, 2019

Hu X, et al. - In this investigation, researchers studied the association of physical activity with blood glucose and the influence of sex, menopause status, and diabetes family history. For this analysis, normal-weight participants were chosen from the REACTION study and divided into inactive (moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity [MVPA] < 30 min/week), low-degree (MVPA ≥ 30 and ≤ 420 min/week), and high-degree (MVPA > 420 min/week) active groups. A total of 2,601 people were enrolled, with an average age of 57.85 ± 8.39 years. Findings suggested an association of higher degree of physical activity with lower blood glucose regardless of sex, menopause status, and first-degree family history of diabetes. MVPA was an independently associated negative factor for blood glucose. For people with sexual and family susceptibility to diabetes—but without overweight/obesity—physical activity with adequate time and intensity may be of substantial benefit.
