Intravenous acetaminophen reduces length of stay via mediation of postoperative opioid consumption after posterior spinal fusion in a pediatric cohort

Clinical Journal of Pain Jun 20, 2018

Olbrecht VA, et al. - For ascertaining the effect of intravenous acetaminophen (IV APAP) on length of hospital stay (LOS) via mediation of opioid-related side effects in pediatric patients, researchers prospectively recruited 114 adolescents undergoing posterior spinal fusion with patient-controlled analgesia and adjuvant therapy. Based on the use of IV APAP, patients were grouped: control (n=70) and treatment (n=44). Observations revealed hastened oral intake and decreased LOS in association with IV APAP in the adolescent surgery population, this might be due to a decreased opioid consumption with it. Thereby suggesting that addition of IV APAP in this population may reduce LOS, an important implication in the setting of escalating health care costs.
