Intravenous acetaminophen does not have an opioid sparing effect in emergency department patients with painful conditions

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Feb 06, 2020

Blok Z, et al. - In order to evaluate the requirement for opioids in emergency department patients with painful conditions who receive intravenous acetaminophen, researchers conducted this prospective cohort study examining patients (aged 18 years and older) treated with opioids in the acute phase. Inclusion of a total of 116 patients was performed; of these, 76 received intravenous acetaminophen. The analysis revealed no decrease in opioid requirement in adult patients with acute pain in correlation to the additional use of intravenous acetaminophen during emergency department stay. A trend towards reduced opioid requirement was observed during 24 h after discharge.
