Intrauterine device use and ovarian cancer risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Obstetrics and Gynecology Oct 04, 2019
Wheeler LJ, et al. - Researchers examined how intrauterine device (IUD) use is associated with the risk of ovarian cancer via performing a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis. Searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science Core Collection from inception to June 2018, they reviewed abstracts from 399 articles and from Google Scholar, they identified 200 additional articles; from these, they included 15 studies with individual level data regarding IUD use and incident ovarian cancer. On critical review, they selected 11 of these studies for meta-analysis. They performed a random-effects meta-analysis to confirm minimal bias. Outcomes revealed a reduced incidence of ovarian cancer in correlation with intrauterine device use. Unfortunately, they identified limited prospective investigation into the role of IUDs in ovarian cancer prevention.
