Intradermal sterile water injection vs diclofenac sodium in acute renal colic pain: A randomized controlled trial

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine May 02, 2020

Moussa M, et al. - Among patients who presented to the Emergency Department with renal colic, researchers compared the efficacy of intracutaneous sterile water injection (ISWI), vs that of diclofenac and placebo, for relieving the pain of acute renal colic. Overall patients were 150. The participants were randomly assigned to 3 groups: control group was administered intracutaneous injections of 0.5 cm3 isotonic saline in the flank, group A received intracutaneous injections of 0.5 cm 3 ISWI in the flank, and group B was given an intramuscular injection of 75 mg Diclofenac in the gluteal region. Using a visual analogue scale system, experts evaluated pain severity at baseline and 30, 45 min, and 60 min after injections. Findings revealed equal effectiveness of ISWI and diclofenac for relieving the pain of acute renal colic.
