Intimate partner violence against women living with and without HIV, and the associated factors in Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia: A comparative cross-sectional study

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Aug 30, 2019

Meskele M, et al. - Women living with and without HIV in Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia were examined for the prevalence and associated factors of intimate partner violence (IPV). In this comparative cross-sectional study, 816 women between 18–49 years of age (408 = HIV positive, 408 = HIV negative) were interviewed. Researchers recruited the participants from nine health facilities, using a multistage sampling technique, based on probability proportional to the number of clients. Among included women, the lifetime prevalence of IPV of 59.7% was observed indicating a high prevalence of IPV against women both living with and without HIV. Lifetime prevalence of emotional violence was reported in 413 (50.6%), physical violence in 349 (42.8%), sexual violence in 219 (26.8%), and controlling behaviors by husbands/partners in 489 (59.9%). IPV was identified to be associated with controlling behavior of husband/partner, income, bride price payment, women’s decision to refuse sex, age group of women, partner’s family choosing wife, alcohol consumption by partner, number of sexual partners, and if partner ever physically fought with another man. Based on these findings, they recommend involving males in programs of gender-based violence prevention in order to change their violent behavior and suggest the necessity for interventions to improve the economic status of women. Further, they emphasize advising both partners to have a single partner and arranging marriage based on mutual consent rather than being arranged by parents.
