Internal fixation vs hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fractures in the elderly: A cost-effectiveness analysis
Injury Mar 12, 2020
Liu H, Li N, Zhang X, et al. - The cost-effectiveness of internal fixation vs hemiarthroplasty (HA) for elderly patients with displaced femoral neck fractures was investigated. Researchers evaluated clinical outcomes using the EuroQol 5 dimensions (EQ-5D) score at 3, 12, and 24 months in a total of 121 patients ≥ 65 years old who were divided into internal fixation (n = 58) or HA group (n = 63). The HA group exhibited a higher mean EQ-5D index score at the early follow-up. The 2 treatment groups did not differ at 24 months in EQ-5D. Findings suggest better outcomes in association with HA vs internal fixation in the treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients. However, because of the less total cost, internal fixation is identified as possibly more cost-effective.
