Interleukin-8 and lower severity of depression in females, but not males, with treatment-resistant depression

Journal of Psychiatric Research Jun 14, 2021

Kruse JL, Olmstead R, Hellemann G, et al. - Researchers aimed at evaluating the cross-sectional relationships between IL-8 and depression severity, as measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HAM-D] Score among 108 patients with treatment resistant depression (50 females). In addition, they investigated gender-specific relationships, as well as relationships with depressive symptom profiles. Further, they explored other inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, CRP) in relation to HAM-D. Findings revealed correlation of higher IL-8 with lower depression score among depressed females, but not males. Correlation of higher IL-8 with lower anxiety/hypochondriasis factor scores was evident across genders. No correlation of plasma levels of other inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, CRP) with depression score was evident.
