Integrated behavioral treatment for Veterans with co-morbid chronic pain and hazardous opioid use: A randomized controlled pilot trial

The Journal of Pain Nov 28, 2019

Vowles KE, Witkiewitz K, Cusack KJ, et al. - Given the occurrence of opioid misuse in some chronic pain settings and rarity of integrated treatments for both opioid misuse and pain interference, researchers examined whether an integrated treatment is feasible and efficacious in Veterans with chronic pain, who also have evidence of hazardous opioid use. They assessed the feasibility and initial efficacy of integrating two empirically supported interventions: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for chronic pain and Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention for opioid misuse. To treat chronic pain and opioid misuse, they randomized half of the participants to the integrated treatment group; usual care was provided to all participants through a Veteran's Administration co-occurring disorders medical clinic. Outcomes support the feasibility, with the exception of recruitment and support the efficacy in comparison to usual care.
