Influenza complicating delivery hospitalization and its association with severe maternal morbidity in the United States, 2000–2018
Obstetrics and Gynecology Jul 29, 2021
Wen T, Arditi B, Riley LE, et al. - Researchers conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis of delivery hospitalizations using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample with the aim to describe trends of an influenza diagnosis at delivery hospitalization as well as its correlation with severe maternal morbidity. Of 74.7 million delivery hospitalizations assessed in this work, 23 per 10,000 were complicated by an influenza diagnosis. Findings revealed an increased risk of severe maternal morbidity, as well as an increased risk of influenza-related maternal and obstetric complications, among pregnant women with influenza. In light of these results, they emphasize primary prevention and recognition of influenza infection during pregnancy as important to lower downstream maternal morbidity and mortality.
