Influence of patella height on total knee arthroplasty: Outcomes and survival
Journal of Arthroplasty Nov 14, 2018
Gaillard R, et al. - Researchers evaluated the clinical results of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with pre-operative patella alta or patella baja, vs total knee arthroplasty with pre-operative normal patellar height. They measured the patella height using the Blackburne-Peel (BP) method in an initial, prospective cohort of 4,103 TKAs performed at a single center. They defined three groups viz, normal patella height (0.541.06) and patella baja (BP index≤0.54). Findings suggested an increased risk of post-operative patellar for patients with pre-operative patella baja. Post-operatively, the three groups were not seen to be significantly different in terms of KSS (knee and function scores). Findings suggested similar survival rates in the three groups with each above 91% at 10 years.
