Increased risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy: A population-based cohort study
Clinical Cardiology Aug 30, 2018
Hu WS, et al. - Researchers used data retrieved from the ICD-9 hospitalizations coding system, to compare the rate of onset of atrial fibrillation (AF) between a cohort of 15,670 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients and a propensity-matched cohort of 15,670 control patients. They used univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of incident AF related to BPH. In the BPH group vs in the control group, the estimated incidence rate was 4.77 per 1,000 person years vs 3.76 per 1,000 person years, respectively. Based on the findings, they concluded a higher risk of AF in patients with BPH vs propensity matched controls. They also noted that, after the application of surgical intervention for BPH, the risk no longer remained.
