Increased incidence of cutaneous keratinocytic and melanocytic malignancies in patients with age-related macular degeneration

Retina Apr 24, 2020

Shah SM, Starr MR, Dalvin LA, et al. - Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project in Olmsted County, Minnesota, researchers conducted a retrospective, consecutive review to explore a possible link between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cutaneous malignancies. The sample consisted of all patients who had received at least 1 intravitreal injection for wet AMD between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2013. Age- and sex-matched control groups involved 473 pre–anti–vascular endothelial growth factor era wet AMD patients, 504 concurrent time dry AMD patients, and 504 patients without AMD. Compared with patients with dry AMD or those without AMD, those with wet AMD incurred an increased rate of overall malignancies. Compared with patients without AMD, those with dry AMD also had higher rates of malignancy. This is the first study to identify a correlation between AMD and cutaneous malignancies, encouraging a potential association discussion when a patient presents one of the two conditions.
