Incidence of intraoperative and early postoperative adverse events in a large cohort of consecutive laser vision correction treatments
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 16, 2019
Schallhorn JM, et al. - In this retrospective case series involving 31,921 (61,833 eyes) for LASIK and 5,016 (9,467 eyes) for photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), researchers assessed the incidence of adverse events (AE) after laser vision correction. Between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2016, they included patients who had LASIK or PRK. They extracted and retrospectively reviewed all AEs recorded in the electronic medical record. Data reported that the total number of AE was 850 for LASIK and 227 for PRK. There were 287 serious adverse events (SAEs) in the LASIK group, and there were 65 SAEs in the PRK group. The loss of two or more lines of CDVA was recorded in 0.37% of eyes combining LASIK and PRK data. Overall, the authors concluded that contemporary LASIK and PRK are safe procedures where the occurrence of SAEs is small.
