Incidence and severity of postoperative complications following oral, periodontal, and implant surgeries: A retrospective study
Journal of Periodontology Jul 08, 2019
Askar H, et al. - In this retrospective study involving 3,900 patients who had surgical procedures including, sinus floor elevation, guided tissue regeneration, crown lengthening, implant placement, soft tissue graft, open flap debridement or surgical removal of impacted teeth, researchers evaluated and categorized the postoperative complications that occur following, and were associated with, oral, periodontal and implant surgeries. The most frequent complication was postoperative dentinal hypersensitivity, followed by excessive pain, and moderate postoperative bleeding. Compared to other processes, surgical removal of affected teeth and lateral sinus floor elevation are more susceptible to more severe complications. In addition, the most likely to happen are complications that do not impede beneficial surgical results and/or daily routine activity. Smoking and diabetes have generally been associated with postoperative complications.
