Incidence and prevalence of vitreomacular traction with and without macular hole in Germany
Clinical Ophthalmology Jan 23, 2019
Menzler J, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic literature review for symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion (sVMA) cases in Germany in 2016 to estimate the incidence and prevalence of vitreomacular traction with/without a macular hole. The prevalence of sVMA was 1,365 per 100,000 population, with an incidence of 6.96 per 100,000/year and for Germany, it elucidated to 1,119,300 candidates, with 5,700 new cases listed every year. About 2,300 subjects were observed undergoing vitrectomy due to sVMA in Germany every year; among them, about 1,700 cases had vitreomacular traction (VMT). They noticed a low incidence of patients presenting to the clinic than expected, implying a range of cases with sVMA are outside the clinic system.
