In-hospital course and complications of laminectomy alone vs laminectomy plus instrumented posterolateral fusion for lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis: A retrospective analysis of 1,804 patients from the NSQIP database

Spine Apr 16, 2021

Badhiwala JH, Leung SN, Jiang F, et al. - A retrospective analysis was conducted to compare the short-term outcomes of laminectomy with/without fusion for single-level lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS). Researchers included a total of 1,804 patients with lumbar DS, 802 had undergone laminectomy alone, and 1,002 laminectomies plus fusion at a single level from the 2012–2017 NSQIP database. The data exhibited that single-level laminectomy plus fusion for lumbar DS to have a comparable short-term safety profile to laminectomy alone. Nevertheless, fusion was correlated with longer operative time and length of stay, higher risk of blood transfusion, and greater need for inpatient rehabilitation. Via clinicians, these factors should be recognized and discussed with patients in the context of their values when weighing surgical treatment of lumbar DS.
