Impact of rapid transition to telemedicine-based delivery on allergy/immunology care during COVID-19
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Apr 26, 2021
Tsao LR, Villanueva SA, Pines DA, et al. - Researchers report the results of rapid transition to telemedicine (TM)-based care (video visit followed by in-person visits dedicated to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures when required) at an academic allergy/immunology (A/I) practice during COVID-19. Of patients originally scheduled between 3/10/20-4/30/20, overall 69% (265/382) were able to complete video visits. Significant reductions in environmental and food skin testing completion rates were noted with TM-based care vs in-person care. Overall, continued A/I care delivery was permitted by transitioning to TM-based care, strategies are still required to attain higher testing completion rates as well as to make sure that video visits do not exacerbate existing disparities.
