Impact of positive vascular margins status after surgical resection of non- metastatic renal cell carcinoma with caval tumour thrombus: a propensity score multicentre study

World Journal of Urology Nov 18, 2021

Vamour N, Gasmi A, Leroy X, et al. - Researchers aimed at ascertaining the impact of positive vascular margins (PVMs) following surgical resection of non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with inferior vena cava (IVC) tumor thrombus.

  • Outcomes of a total of 209 patients, who underwent radical nephrectomy with the removal of IVC tumor thrombus for RCC, were analyzed.

  • PVMs were identified in 49 (23%) patients.

  • Per outcomes, risk of local recurrence appeared higher in patients with RCC after nephrectomy with thrombectomy in correlation with the presence of PVMs.

  • However, the risk of distant metastasis or death appeared unaffected by the presence of PVMs.
