Impact of physical activity on hypoglycaemia in patients with diabetes
Clinical Diabetology Apr 11, 2018
Zielinska K, et al. - Experts explored the impact of physical activity level on the occurrence of hypoglycaemia in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (mean age 30 ± 11 years, mean duration of diabetes 12 ± 8 years, HbA1c: 7.5 ± 1.4%) and patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (mean age 60 ± 12 years, mean duration of diabetes 10 ± 9 years, HbA1c: 8 ± 1.5%). In type 1 diabetes mellitus, the number of episodes appeared to be significantly lower in the low activity group vs the high activity group. In type 2 diabetes mellitus, the association was found to be similar. Findings showed that the incidence of hypoglycaemia rose alongside increasing physical activity. This underscored the need of increased education in patients planning physical activity.
