Impact of frailty on outcomes after primary and revision total hip arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 21, 2018
Johnson RL, et al. - Researchers assessed if preoperative frailty has any impact on adverse events after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Participants were all patients ≥50 years having unilateral primary or revision THA at a single institution from 2005 through 2016. Findings suggested an association of a higher preoperative frailty index with increased mortality and perioperative complications after primary and revision THA. Clinically important information was provided by the proposed frailty deficit index for healthcare providers to use when counseling patients when making a decision about surgery. They did not observe any significant associations with aseptic loosening, periprosthetic fracture, or heterotopic ossification.
