Impact of exercise capacity upon respiratory functions, perception of dyspnea, and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

International Journal of COPD Jun 06, 2021

Liu W, et al. - In this study cohort with 512 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, researchers sought to determine how exercise capacity could influence respiratory functions, perception of dyspnea, and quality of life (QoL). Based on the distance walked in the 6-minute walking test, the patients were split into four subgroups. Significantly better disease-specific QoL scores were evident in patients who walked > 350 m vs those of other groups. There was a negative correlation between the walking distance and anxiety, depression, and dyspnea scores. Overall, findings showed an adverse impact of reduced walking distance on respiratory functions, psychological symptoms, and QoL among patients who walked < 350 m.
