Impact of discharge location after transcatheter aortic valve replacement on 1-year outcomes in women: Results from the WIN-TAVI registry
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Feb 15, 2019
Mehilli J, et al. – Using information on women undergoing contemporary transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) as reported in the Women’s INternational Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (WIN-TAVI) registry (the first all-female TAVR registry to study the safety and performance of contemporary TAVR in women [n=1,019]), researchers investigated the link between discharge location after TAVR and 1-year outcomes. Comparisons were made between women discharged home vs those discharged to another location (nursing home, rehabilitation, or other hospital). Considering discharge home as the reference group, they adjusted 1-year outcomes using multivariable Cox regression methods. A total of 614 women were discharged home (75.2%) and 203 (24.8%) were discharged to another location. Women discharged to other locations vs women discharged home were older with a greater prevalence of severe lung disease requiring home oxygen and renal failure on dialysis, but were less frequently considered frail or at high surgical risk. Greater hazard for 1-year Valve Academic Research Consortium 2 efficacy and safety endpoints, cardiovascular death, and stroke were found in relation to non-home discharge following multivariable adjustment.
