Impact of decreasing the proportion of higher energy foods and reducing portion sizes on food purchased in worksite cafeterias: A stepped-wedge randomised controlled trial

PLoS Medicine Oct 08, 2021

Reynolds JP, Ventsel M, Kosīte D, et al. - Assessing 2 interventions’ impact on energy purchased in worksite cafeterias, it was found that reducing the proportion of higher energy foods decreased the energy purchased, and moreover, further reductions were evident when portion sizes were decreased. These interventions, especially conjointly, could be effective as part of broader strategies to decrease overconsumption of energy from food in out-of-home settings.

  • In this stepped-wedge randomized controlled trial spanning 25 weeks, 2 interventions were tested: (i) availability: replacing higher energy products with lower energy products; and (ii) size: reducing the portion size of higher energy products.

  • Overall 19 worksite cafeterias were randomized to the order in which they introduced the 2 interventions.

  • Energy purchased reduced by 4.8% with the availability intervention and by 11.5% with the availability plus size intervention.
