Hypoglycaemia was common in acute gastroenteritis in a prospective hospital-based study but electrolyte imbalances were not

Qadori M, et al. - The correlation between the severity of acute gastroenteritis and blood test abnormalities were evaluated by the experts in children under 5 years referred for outpatient or inpatient management for gastroenteritis. They found that hypoglycaemia, elevated urea, low bicarbonate and negative base excess exhibited a connection with disease severity. Findings revealed that hypoglycaemia was a common occurrence in acute gastroenteritis. However, major electrolyte disturbances appeared to be infrequent.
