European Heart Journal Oct 18, 2021

Boucheron P, Lailler G, Moutengou E, et al. - Researchers examined how hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are associated with the onset of chronic hypertension in primiparous women in the first years following childbirth.

  • Using data from the French National Health Data System (SNDS), researchers included 2,663,573 primiparous women without pre-existing chronic hypertension who delivered between 2010 and 2018 in this nationwide cohort study.

  • Occurrence of preeclampsia (PE) was recorded in 66,260 (2.16%) women and gestational hypertension (GH) in 113,803 (4.27%) women.

  • For all PE subgroups, duration of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy exposure is an additional risk factor for developing chronic hypertension.

  • More frequent and earlier consultation with a general practitioner or cardiologist was observed in women with HDP .
