Hypertension, mitral valve disease, atrial fibrillation and low education level predict delirium and worst outcome after cardiac surgery in older adults

Oliveira FR, et al. - The incidence, predisposing and triggering factors of delirium following cardiac surgery were investigated herein. Delirium was found to be a frequent complication, associated with worst outcome, in older adult patients submitted to cardiac surgery. Notably, education level, hypertension, mitral valve disease, and atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery independently conferred risk for delirium.
