How effective is a powered toothbrush as compared to a manual toothbrush? A systematic review and meta-analysis of single brushing exercises
International Journal of Dental Hygiene Jul 28, 2019
Elkerbout TA, et al. - Via searching MEDLINE-PubMed and Cochrane-CENTRAL from inception to February 2019, researchers examined the impact of a single brushing exercise on plaque removal of a powered toothbrush (PTB) compared to a manual toothbrush (MTB). The criteria for inclusion were (randomized) controlled clinical trials performed in human subjects ≥18 years of age, in good general health and without periodontitis, orthodontic treatment, implants and/or removable prosthesis. Papers assessing a PTB compared with a MTB in a single brushing exercise were involved. According to this systematic review and meta-analysis, there is a moderate assurance that the PTB was more efficient than the MTB in plaque removal after a single brushing exercise, regardless of the plaque index scale used.
