Households’ age, country of birth, and marital status, stronger predictor variables than education in the prevalence of dental sealants, restorations, and caries among US children 5–19 years of age, NHANES 2005–2010

BMC Oral Health Sep 05, 2019

Alos-Rullan V - Using data representative of the U.S. population, expert aspired to explore whether households (HHs) age, birth country, and marital status, were strong predictors as HHs education for dental sealants, restorations, and caries in children 5 to 19 years of age. Participants in the study were children 5 to 19 years of age (n = 9,151) and HHs > 18 years of age (n = 31,034). Data reported that the prevalence of children aged 5–19 years with dental sealants, restorations, and caries was 31.3, 43, and 15.8% respectively. In HHs with a college education, the odds of children with dental sealants were higher, but HHs ages 30–49 provided higher odds for sealants than college-educated spouses. HHs birthplace raised the probabilities of children with restorations more than HHs education. HH children who never married had greater chances of dental caries. Findings suggested that HHs age, marital status, and gender may help to better understand the root causes of children's oral health disparities. Knowledge of the aforementioned characteristics of HHs affecting children's access to dental services may help providers identify families with children at higher risk of caries or failing to benefit from preventive dental services. Tailored outreach, case management, and interventions in patient education could help families and providers work on strategies to improve the oral health of children.
