Homelessness and emergency medicine: A review of the literature
Academic Emergency Medicine | Dec 14, 2017
Salhi BA, et al. - In this work, the available evidence on the demographics, prevalence, and clinical characteristics, and evidence-based management of homeless persons in the Emergency Department (ED) are synthesized. In the ED setting, homelessness might be under-recognized. Researchers identify distinct care needs and patterns of ED utilization of homeless ED patients that are unmet by the current disease-oriented and episodic models of emergency medicine. They recommend more research to assess the prevalence and characteristics of homelessness in the ED and to develop evidence-based treatment strategies in caring for this vulnerable population.
