HIV status does not worsen oral health outcomes
Journal of Clinical Periodontology Apr 26, 2019
Williams-Wiles L, et al. - In order to assess how infection by HIV influences oral health outcomes, researchers analyzed 6,092 individuals and chose 73 HIV-positive subjects and 261 matched HIV-negative control subjects. The two groups were compared regarding several dental conditions, including the need for root canal treatment, gingivitis, periodontitis, hairy leukoplakia, and dental caries. HIV-positive and -negative groups showed no difference in dental disease. Periodontitis prevalence in HIV-positive patients and in HIV-negative patients was 16.4% and 19.2%, respectively.
