Histological and molecular adipose tissue changes are related to metabolic syndrome rather than lipodystrophy in HIV-infected patients-A cross-sectional study
The Journal of Infectious Diseases May 27, 2018
Langkilde A, et al. - In HIV-infected patients on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), adipose tissue changes related to lipodystrophy and metabolic syndrome were examined in order to clarify whether it may be acceptable to focus diagnosis on metabolic syndrome rather than lipodystrophy. They performed a cross-sectional study of 60 HIV-infected men on cART and 15 healthy men and found that metabolic syndrome was associated with major unfavourable abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue changes. Thus they recommend focussing on metabolic syndrome diagnosis in HIV-infected patients on cART with regards to adipose tissue dysfunction and risk of cardio-metabolic complications in a clinical setting.
