High-sensitivity troponin I and incident coronary events, stroke, heart failure hospitalization, and mortality in the ARIC study

Circulation May 03, 2019

Jia X, et al. - Among participants (aged 54-74 years) from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study who did not have prior cardiovascular disease (CVD; n=8,121), researchers investigated if plasma troponin I measured by a high-sensitivity assay (hs-TnI) is related to incident CVD and mortality. Participants were followed-up for a median duration of approximately 15 years. In 85% of the study population, they found detectable hs-TnI levels. Findings revealed a strong association of elevated hs-TnI with increased global CVD incidence in the general population; this link was independent of traditional risk factors. Overall, hs-TnI and high-sensitivity troponin T may offer complementary vs redundant information.
