High prevalence of diabetes before and after lung transplantation: Target for improving outcome?

Internal Medicine Journal Jul 03, 2018

Fazekas-Lavu M, et al. - The prevalence of diabetes in patients waitlisted for the lung transplant as well as early post-transplantation was determined in this analysis. For the purpose of this investigation, patients on the St Vincent's Heart Lung database from 1/4/14 to 30/9/15 on the waitlist (Study 1) and those transplanted (Study 2) were examined. Study 1 included 114 subjects and Study 2 included 78 transplanted subjects. In lung transplant patients, a high prevalence of diabetes was found. Findings suggested that earlier endocrine participation in lung transplant services was likely to reduce diabetes-related morbidity and mortality further.
