High percentage of neurologic deficits in the electrophysiology study of the lower urinary tract in patients with detrusor underactivity and chronic urinary retention
Neurourology and Urodynamics Mar 08, 2021
Jiang YH, et al. - This research was sought to apply electrophysiologic (EP) studies to investigate the micturition reflex and external urethral sphincter (EUS) conditions of chronic urinary retention patients. Researchers studied 60 patients with urodynamic detrusor underactivity (DU) and chronic urinary retention using bulbocavernous reflex by electric stimulation, electromyography of the EUS, and nerve conduction velocity studies of the pudendal nerve. They examined EP findings in DU patients with different etiologies. The results of this study illustrated that chronic urinary retention patients with urodynamic DU not only have bladder dysfunction, but also potential neuropathy in the sacral reflexes, pudendal nerve, or urethral sphincter innervation. The data exhibited that the neurologic deficits evaluated in EP studies may influence the decision‐making around the therapy to restore the voiding function in DU.
