High levels of serum IL-6 and serum hepcidin and low CD4 cell count were risk factors of anemia of chronic disease in HIV patients on the combination of antiretroviral therapy
HIV/AIDS - Research and Palliative Care Jun 03, 2019
Agus Somia IK, et al. - Researchers investigated if the risk for the anemia of chronic disease (ACD) could be predicted with high levels of serum IL-6 and serum hepcidin and CD4<350 cells/ul in HIV-infected patients on the combination of antiretroviral (cARV) therapy with successful clinically and immunological responses. In this matched case-control study, 42 cases (HIV patients with ACD) and 42 controls (HIV patients without ACD) were included. The analysis revealed that, for HIV patients on cARV therapy, risk factors for ACD included high levels of serum IL-6, high levels of serum hepcidin and CD4 count <350 cells/μL.
