High intake of dietary fibre from fruit and vegetables reduces the risk of hospitalisation for diverticular disease
European Journal of Nutrition Aug 09, 2018
Mahmood MW, et al. - In this cohort study, researchers determined the link between different dietary fibers and hospitalization due to diverticular disease (DD) of the colon. They used the Swedish Mammography Cohort and the Cohort of Swedish Men linked to the Swedish Inpatient Register and the Causes of Death Register. They found that risk of hospitalization decreased by 30% in women with intake of fruit and vegetable fibers in the highest quartile (median 12.6 g/day) vs those with the lowest intake (4.1 g/day). A 32% decreased risk was observed in men within the highest quartile (10.3 g/day) vs those with a low intake (2.9 g/day). Overall, a high intake of fruits and vegetables may attenuate the risk of hospitalization ascribed to DD. Findings revealed no impact of cereals on the risk.
