High fibroblast growth factor 23 is associated with coronary calcification in patients with high adiponectin: Analysis from the Korean Cohort Study for Outcome in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease study

Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation May 16, 2018

Hyun YY, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers tested the hypothesis that adiponectin plays a role in the effect of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) on coronary artery calcification (CAC) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. They also investigated if the link between FGF23 and CAC is modified by serum adiponectin level. Study participants were predialysis CKD patients from the Korean Cohort Study for Outcome in Patients with CKD cohort. Cardiac computed tomography was used to assess coronary artery calcium score (CACS) and CAC was defined as a CACS >100. Findings demonstrated an association of high serum FGF23 with CAC in CKD patients with high adiponectin, but not in those with low adiponectin.
