High density lipoprotein function is reduced in patients affected by genetic or idiopathic hypogonadism

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Mar 09, 2019

Adorni MP, et al. - In a series of genetic and idiopathic hypogonadal patients and control subjects, researchers ascertained if reduced testosterone levels correlate with lipoprotein function, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) and serum cholesterol loading capacity (CLC) were assessed. According to findings, lower cholesterol efflux and increased influx were associated with pro-atherogenic lipoprotein-associated changes in hypogonadal patients, thus offering an explanation for a potentially increased cardiovascular risk.
