Hepatitis C virus genotype affects survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

BMC Cancer Aug 28, 2019

Park HK, Lee SS, Im CB, et al. - Using the data of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) assessed at two centers in Korea between January 2005 and December 2016, researchers conducted a multicenter, retrospective, observational study to ascertain if the HCV genotype influenced the survival rate of these patients. The study sample consisted of 180 patients (median age: 66.0 years; median overall survival: 28.6 months). Investigators found that patients with HCV genotype 2 had longer overall survival than those with other genotypes among patients with HCV-related HCC treated with various modalities, including curative, non-curative, and supportive treatment. The findings indicate that by influencing liver function, the HCV genotype impacts overall survival.
