Hepatitis B virus infection and the risk of cancer in the elderly US population
International Journal of Cancer Dec 03, 2018
Mahale P, et al. - In this case-control study, researchers used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database to determine the links between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and cancers in US adults aged ≥ 66 years. A total of 1,825,316 cases (people with first cancers diagnosed in SEER registries [1993–2013]) as well as 200,000 controls (randomly selected, cancer-free individuals who were frequency-matched to cases on age, sex, race and calendar year) were included in this study. They used logistic regression to evaluate the associations with HBV infection (ascertained by Medicare claims). According to findings, an increased risk of cancers other than hepatocellular carcinoma, such as bile duct cancers and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, was observed in relation to HBV infection.
