Hemiretinal asymmetry in peripapillary vessel density in healthy, glaucoma suspect, and glaucoma eyes

American Journal of Ophthalmology Jun 10, 2021

Hong KL, Burkemper B, Urrea AL, et al. - In this population-based, cross-sectional study, researchers sought to examine hemiretinal asymmetry in radial peripapillary capillary vessel area density (VAD) of healthy, glaucoma suspect, and glaucoma eyes of varying severity and its diagnostic utility for glaucoma. One thousand forty-three eyes of 1,043 candidates (587 healthy, 270 suspect, 67 mild, 54 moderate, 65 severe glaucoma) were involved. The hemiretinal difference in VAD is greater in early glaucoma and may aid in early detection when damage is focal, however, its diagnostic ability seems to be less robust in advanced glaucoma when damage is diffuse.
