Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with reduced risk of Barretts esophagus: A meta-analysis and systematic review

BMC Gastroenterology Dec 10, 2021

Du YL, Duan RQ, Duan LP, et al. - The role of Helicobacter pylori (Hp), which is a class I carcinogen in gastric carcinogenesis, has been investigated in Barretts esophagus (BE).

  • Researchers included 46 studies from 1,505 potential citations.

  • Hp and BE were noted to exhibit significant inverse relationship with considerable heterogeneity; this was especially evident with the CagA-positive Hp strain; a decrease in GERD prevalence likely mediates this, although this is not evident in the absence of current Hp infection.
