Heavy and binge alcohol drinking and parenting status in the United States from 2006 to 2018: An analysis of nationally representative cross-sectional surveys

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Dec 09, 2019

McKetta S, et al. - Given the damaging effects of alcohol consumption among women who parent on child health, and the concerns regarding increased drinking among women in the United States in their reproductive years over the past decade, researchers examined if parenting status and gender affect binge and heavy drinking. Binge drinking was defined as 5 or more drinks in a single day for men and 4 or more drinks for women, and heavy drinking was defined as 60 or more days with binge episodes in a year. Time trends in drinking outcomes by gender, age, and parenting status were determined using survey-weighted logistic regression from the 2006–2018 waves of the cross-sectional National Health Interview Survey (NHIS, N = 239,944 eligible respondents). The analysis revealed that parenting status for women did not affect trends in binge and heavy drinking over time; rather, gender and age were mainly related to the declines and increases over time. An increase in binge and heavy drinking was noted among women both with and without children; men, irrespective of parenting status, and women without children consumed more alcohol than women with children. For adult morbidity and mortality, increased drinking rates in the past decade are concerning regardless of the impact on child health: both genders exhibited increases in binge drinking, and older women showed increase in heavy drinking. They recommend screening men and women of all ages and parenting status for heavy alcohol use and referring them to specialty care as appropriate.
