Hearing aid prevalence and factors related to use among older adults from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery May 08, 2019
Arnold ML, et al. - Among US adults of Hispanic/Latino backgrounds, researchers characterized hearing aid prevalence and factors associated with hearing aid use. Hearing aid use was reported in 87 people in this cross-sectional study of 1898 adults with hearing loss from varied Hispanic/Latino backgrounds. Poorer measured hearing, higher perceived need, access to health insurance, and place of residence were factors associated with higher odds of reported hearing aid use. Among adults from Hispanic/Latino backgrounds, findings showed underuse of hearing aids. Lack of health insurance was a primary factor related to use, which suggests that access influenced hearing aid use. Changes in policy and clinical service provision are required to increase the use of hearing aid among aging Hispanic/Latino adults in the US.
