Health-Related Quality of Life in Cleft Lip and/or Palate Patients – A cross-sectional study from preschool age until adolescence

Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery Jul 15, 2018

Naros A, et al. - Experts assessed the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) patients from preschool age (4 years) until adolescence (18 years). Surprisingly, compared with normative data from healthy controls a higher HRQoL was seen in cleft patients. Findings suggested a possibility of bias as the return rate of the forwarded questionnaire was low. Keeping this in mind, a conclusion could be drawn that compared to the healthy children, the HRQoL in the cleft patients was not significantly lower. On the other hand, an assumption could be made regarding the contribution of special attention of the parents and the support from speech therapy and other medical professionals to a positive effect on family interaction, communication skills, and self-esteem.
